BIG Dreams and BIG Tests Require BIG Resilience in Elsa, TX with Youth Motivational Speaker Eddie Cortés
Every time I step onto a school stage, I see students full of potential—some confident, some hesitant, but all with something deep inside waiting to be unlocked. This week, that stage was in Elsa, TX, at Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary, where I had the incredible opportunity to speak as part of my “I’m Possible” school assembly program. And let me tell you—these students showed up ready to embrace resilience, push through hard things, and take on their upcoming STAAR state exams like champions.
The Hard Things That Shape Us
Life is full of challenges, and for these students, state exams are one of those tough moments that test perseverance, focus, and grit. But here’s the truth: hard things make us stronger.
When school leadership invited me to speak, they made it clear that they wanted to equip their students with more than just academic knowledge. They wanted to instill a resilient mindset that says:
- You CAN do hard things.
- You are worthy of success.
- Your dreams are worth chasing.
That’s exactly what we focused on in our time together. I challenged them to DO HARD THINGS. STAAR exams? Tough, but possible. Dreams of playing basketball or softball? Hard work required, but absolutely within reach. Resilience is about learning to bounce back stronger when things get tough.

Words That Make an Impact
I’m inspired just as much from students as they are from my presentation. And this week, their words reminded me why I do what I do. After the assembly, students came up to give high-fives and hugs, and some of them shared messages that hit me right in the heart:
-
“You INSPIRED me to DREAM BIG!”
-
“Your message INSPIRED me to chase my BASKETBALL DREAMS.”
-
“Eddie, you INSPIRED me to DO HARD THINGS.”
Hearing those words confirmed that the message of resilience and belief in oneself is landing. That’s what it’s all about—helping students believe in their possibilities.
Leadership That Truly Cares
One of the standout moments of this visit was seeing just how intentional and inspiring the school leadership is. Principal Villarreal and Counselor Reyna are all in when it comes to creating an school culture where students feel seen, encouraged, and empowered.
They aren’t just focused on academics; they are invested in the whole student. The kind of leadership that takes the time to bring in a motivational youth speaker to talk about resilience? That’s the kind of leadership that changes lives.
Resilience for Life (Not Just for a Test)
The STAAR state exams are a challenge, but in the grand scheme of life, they are just one of many obstacles students will face. My message to them was this:
-
You are FULL of possibilities.
-
You are MORE than your limitations.
-
You are WORTHY of your big dreams.
The “I’m Possible” mindset isn’t just about getting through a test; it’s about learning that you can tackle anything life throws your way.
Thank You, Elsa, TX!
A huge shoutout to Principal Villarreal, Counselor Reyna, and the entire team at Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary for welcoming me and making this such an impactful visit. The work you do every day to shape the next generation is inspiring. And to the students—keep chasing those dreams, keep pushing through challenges, and remember: You are possible. By the way, you are going to CRUSH the STAAR exam.
Until next time my friends, dream BIG.
