Resilience Wins in Clemson, SC with Top Youth Speaker Eddie Cortés
This week, I had the privilege of bringing the I’m Possible message to the students of Clemson Elementary in Clemson, SC, and let me tell you—these students were ready to learn, ready to dream, and ready to grow!
The Power of Resilience
If there’s one thing I wanted every student to take away from our time together, it was this:
Resilience isn’t just about getting through tough times—it’s about coming out stronger.
Whether it’s struggling in a class, dealing with drama in friendships, trying to make the team, or chasing a big dream—resilience is what helps us keep going when things get tough.
Research even shows that resilient students get better grades—sometimes a whole letter grade higher! Why? Because they don’t let setbacks define them. They know that failing a test doesn’t mean they’re bad at school, it just means they need to keep working.
Big Lessons from the “I’m Possible” School Assembly Program
During our time together, I challenged the students at Clemson Elementary to start thinking differently about themselves and their dreams. Here are some of the big ideas we unpacked:
- Your potential is bigger than anyone’s opinion of you. If someone doubts you, that’s on them—not you.
- Your potential is greater than your limitations. Maybe you’re not good at something yet, but that doesn’t mean you never will be.
- You are worthy of your dreams. No matter how big or small, your dreams are worth chasing.
- You are full of possibilities. You are not defined by what you can’t do—you are defined by what you’re willing to go after.
Resilience in Action
I reminded the students that resilience isn’t just something we need when life gets hard—it’s something that helps us grow and succeed in every area of life.
In sports? The best athletes aren’t the ones who never lose; they’re the ones who keep pushing after a tough loss.
In the creative arts? Every great musician, artist, or performer failed before they got better.
In the classroom? The students who succeed aren’t always the smartest—they’re the ones who don’t give up when things get hard.
In friendships? Resilient students learn how to work through conflict, rather than walking away.
No matter where life takes them, resilience will always be the key to unlocking their full potential.

This mission is personal. As a middle schooler, Eddie stopped believing in himself. In fact, his negative self-view impacted his grades, relationships, choices, and ultimately his dreams.
