Motivational Youth Speaker in Texas: Eddie Cortés at Tornillo Rally
Best student assembly ever!
A Student Book That Parents and Educators Love
Motivational Youth Speaker in Texas: Eddie Cortés at Tornillo Rally
If you’ve ever walked into a room and felt the collective anxiety of 300 students preparing for a high-stakes test, you know it’s a heavy vibe. But if you’ve ever seen that same room explode into a chant of “I CAN! I WILL!”—well, that’s when you know the magic is happening. I just got back from West Texas, and let me tell you, the students at Tornillo Intermediate didn’t just show up for a rally; they showed up to reclaim their power. Put your phone down, grab your favorite drink, and let’s talk about how we turned testing jitters into a relentless spirit of resilience.
The STAAR Testing Mental Block
Let’s be real for a minute. For students in 3rd through 5th grade, the STAAR test isn’t just a packet of papers; it’s a mountain. When I arrived in Tornillo, TX, the atmosphere was a mix of focus and that subtle, underlying pressure that comes with “testing season.” Ugh!
The problem I see in schools across the country isn’t a lack of academic prep—Tornillo’s teachers are rockstars who have these kids ready for the content. The real hurdle is the “inner game.” When a student hits a difficult question, stumbles over a prompt, or feels the clock ticking, their brain often hits a “face-plant” moment. Without a solid social emotional learning program foundation, that moment of frustration can turn into a “stop sign” instead of a “stepping stone.” The challenge was clear: how do we shift these students from “I’m scared of this test” to “I am bigger than this challenge”?
A High-Energy School Assembly Program Meets a West Texas Rally
That is exactly why I brought the I’m Possible School Assembly to Tornillo Intermediate. This wasn’t your typical “sit still and listen” lecture. This was a high-octane, high-energy experience designed to shake off the testing cobwebs and install the “inner software” of resilience.
As we kicked off the STAAR Rally, I shared the honest truth through humor and powerful storytelling: you will stumble. You will mess up. You might even feel like you’re failing in the middle of a tough challenge. But success doesn’t start when you get the right answer; it starts the moment you decide to get back up after a face-plant.
We leaned heavily into the core pillars of my elementary school assembly program:
- Develop Resilience: We talked about turning obstacles into opportunities. A hard question on a test isn’t a reason to quit; it’s a chance to show what you’re made of.
- The “I’M POSSIBLE” Mindset: We took that big, scary word “Impossible” and broke it down until the whole room was shouting, “I’M POSSIBLE!”
- Positive Self-Worth: I reminded every student that their worth isn’t tied to a test score. They are already smart, friendly, and full of potential.
300+ Elementary Students Ready to be Resilient
The shift at Tornillo Intermediate was palpable. We had over 300 3rd-5th graders laughing, cheering, and—most importantly—reimagining what they are capable of. By the end of the elementary school assembly program, the vibe wasn’t just “high-energy”—it was transformative.
- Developed Resilience: Students walked away with a “bounce-back” mentality, ready to view the STAAR test as an opportunity to shine.
- Boosted Confidence: They left knowing their potential is greater than any challenge—even a state test.
- Improved Focus: By addressing the emotional weight of testing through social emotional learning, we cleared the mental space for academic success.
A West Texas-Sized Thank You!
I want to give a massive thank you to the leadership at Tornillo Intermediate for the invitation and the world-class hospitality. A special shout-out to Alicia Alvarado and Maria Hernandez for your incredible welcome and for prioritizing the “heart” of your students during such a critical time of year. Your dedication to your Mustangs is inspiring!
To the students of Tornillo: Keep being relentless. Keep being kind. And when you sit down for that test, remember: Impossible is just I’M POSSIBLE!

ABOUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER EDDIE CORTÉS
With over 20 years of experience, Eddie Cortés is regarded as one of the most engaging elementary and middle school speakers in the youth market. His mission is to empower students to build resilience and a positive self-worth. This mission is personal. As a middle schooler, Eddie stopped believing in himself. In fact, his negative self-view impacted his grades, relationships, choices, and ultimately his dreams. This experience is what fuels Eddie’s mission. He wants every elementary and middle school student to know that they are worthy of their dreams and have the tools to chase them.
