I'm Possible Book - A Kid's Guide to Building Resilience by Motivational Youth Speaker Eddie Cortes
Are you ready to help your students achieve the impossible? In his book, “I’m Possible”, a kids book about resilience, Eddie Cortés provides a roadmap for helping students become resilient problem-solvers and dream-chasers.

When a room packed with 150 high schoolers—including teens who are used to keeping their guards all the way up—sits shoulder-to-shoulder with police officers in uniform, business and faith leaders, and city officials, the room can go one of two ways: ice cold, or completely electric. By the time we hit the halfway mark at the Rock Hill Police Department’s 4th Annual Chief's Prayer Breakfast, there was no ice left in the building. Laughter was bouncing off the walls, badges and backpacks were leaning in together, and the entire room was locked in on one game-changing truth: adversity is not the end game; it is your launching pad. Grab your favorite drink, pull up a chair, and let’s chat about how an early morning gathering in York County turned into a masterclass in breaking barriers, building trust, and unlocking an unstoppable "I’M POSSIBLE" spirit.

Breaking the Guard Between Street Realities and Uniforms

Let’s be honest with each other for a second. For a lot of inner-city youth, especially those considered hard-to-reach or walking through heavy community pressure, interactions with law enforcement don't usually start over breakfast pancakes. Too often, those encounters happen on the worst days of someone's life—during crises, traffic stops, or family emergencies. Over time, that disconnect creates a thick layer of self-defense.

When teenagers go through hard times without a framework for social emotional learning, their instinct is to put up emotional armor. They look at difficult life circumstances—poverty, family disruption, or neighborhood friction—and their minds start whispering: "Nothing is ever going to change. The deck is stacked against me."

When adversity hits, it’s easy for young people to view obstacles as permanent stop signs. They lose confidence in their future, pull away from caring adults, and begin to believe that big dreams are meant for somebody else, in some other zip code.

The leadership team in Rock Hill Police Department recognized that you cannot build a resilient community by waiting for moments of tension. The challenge was clear: How do we bring teenagers and caring adults together, shatter that mutual awkwardness, and deliver a message of personal worth that shows every teen in that room that they have what it takes to rise above their environment?

The I'm Possible Keynote Meets 600 Community Champions

That is precisely why the Rock Hill Police Department created the Chief's Prayer Breakfast. Designed to foster positive youth-officer interactions far beyond crisis calls, this fourth annual event assembled 600 people: high schoolers, the Chief of Police, patrol officers, local government officials, faith-based leaders, teachers, parents, and civic entrepreneurs.

To bridge that gap, you can’t bring in a dry speaker or deliver a lecture on compliance. As a motivational youth speaker, my focus is to step into the room with pure authenticity, humor, and heart. While I often adapt these principles for an elementary school assembly program, delivering the I'm Possible Keynote to young adults alongside the officers who patrol their neighborhoods requires raw, unfiltered truth.

I didn't dance around the hard realities. I talked openly about what it feels like to stumble, mess up, and face-plant in life. I brought up my own childhood dream of wearing pinstripes for the New York Yankees and how life’s rejections and curveballs forced me to dig deep.

We zeroed in on our most critical learning outcomes:

1. Bounce Back from Adversity: Obstacles as Opportunities

We taught these young leaders that adversity is inevitable, but defeat is optional. An obstacle is not proof that you should quit; it is an invitation to find a new way forward. When you stumble, you don’t stay face-down on the pavement—you get back up, dust yourself off, and realize the struggle is building the exact grit you need to achieve your greatness.

2. Boosted Confidence & Unshakable Self-Worth

Confidence doesn't come from a life with zero problems; it comes from knowing you are bigger than your problems. I looked directly at those 150 high schoolers and reminded them: you are worthy of your biggest dreams right now, today, regardless of your past mistakes or where you started.

3. The Bridge of Caring Adults

To the 350 adults in the room—the officers, the pastors, the educators—we emphasized the power of unconditional belief. Every kid who bounces back can point to at least one caring adult who refused to let them settle for "impossible."

600 Strong Shifting from Survival to Leadership

By the end of the keynote, the transformation inside that room was undeniable. You couldn't tell where the high school tables ended and the police department tables began:

  • Adversity Reframed as Strength: Students openly shared their personal goals—future careers in business, public safety, tech, and the arts—talking about their current challenges not as excuses, but as fuel.

  • Confidence Skyrocketed: Teens who walked into the banquet hall with their arms crossed were standing tall, making eye contact, sharing high-fives, and exchanging contact info with mentors.

  • Trust Across the Badge: Officers and students were laughing, trading stories, and replacing years of suspicion with genuine mutual respect.

When you invest in social emotional learning within a community-wide setting, you don't just inspire kids for a morning. You build a protective web of resilience that follows them right back into the school halls, the neighborhood courts, and their homes.

A Palmetto State-Sized Thank You to Rock Hill!

This kind of community breakthrough only happens when local leaders have the vision and courage to build bridges before they are needed.

A massive, heartfelt thank you to the entire Rock Hill Police Department, the Chief, and the civic leaders of Rock Hill, SC, for the incredible hospitality and warm welcome.

A special shout-out to Lt. Hugh Harrelson and Captain Carlos Culbreath—thank you for your steadfast leadership, your intentional coordination, and your heart for the next generation of York County. You are doing the real, unheralded work of community building, and it was an honor to stand alongside you.

To the high school leaders of Rock Hill: Keep your heads up. When adversity knocks you down, don't you dare stay down. Get back up, remember who you are, and always declare: Impossible is just I’M POSSIBLE!
