Best student assembly ever!
A Student Book That Parents and Educators Love
Motivational Youth Speaker Eddie Cortés in Houston, TX
Have you ever stood in a room where the excitement is so loud you can actually feel the floor vibrating? That was my Friday at West University Elementary in Houston, Texas. I’ve stood on a lot of stages, but there is something historic about looking out at 1,200 students and realizing that every single one of them is carrying a dream, a struggle, and a massive amount of untapped potential.
But here is the reality: even in a powerhouse school like West U, the biggest hurdles students face aren’t always on a test paper—they’re in the mind.
Beyond the Grade Point Average
Let’s get real. We live in a world that moves at 100mph. Our students are under pressure to be the smartest, the fastest, and the best. But what happens when they hit a wall? What happens when they “face-plant” on a goal they’ve worked hard for?
Even with the incredible academic foundation provided by the Houston Independent School District, students still need the “inner software” to navigate disappointment. The goal of a modern social emotional learning program isn’t just to make kids feel good; it’s to help them build resilience. It’s about teaching them that a stumble isn’t a stop sign—it’s a pivot point. We want to move them from “I can’t” to a relentless “I’M POSSIBLE” spirit.
A High-Energy Resilience School Assembly Program
That is where I come in as a high-energy speaker. Sponsored by the phenomenal West University Elementary PTO, we turned the gym into a “Resilience Arena.” We didn’t just talk at the students; we brought them into the story.
Through humor, honesty, and some pretty vivid storytelling, I challenged the 1,200 students to embrace the “hard things.” I shared my own childhood dream of playing for the New York Yankees—not to talk about the wins, but to talk about the grit it took to keep going even after “face planting.” Several students joined me on stage to help share my baseball dream, and at the end, you could hear a pin drop as they realized that their own “Yankee-sized” dreams are worth the effort of getting back up.
This is the core of a high-impact school assembly program: giving students a framework to view obstacles as opportunities for growth.
A Culture of “Dream Chasers”
The culture at West University Elementary is smart, thoughtful, and incredibly kind. It was clear that the work Principal Scott Disch and Counselor Ms. Soderberg are doing has created a safe space for kids to dream big.
By the end of the presentation, the energy was electric. I had students giving me high-fives and hugs, each one eager to share their “I’M POSSIBLE” moment.
They learned:
- Developing Resilience: Students walked away with a “bounce-back” mentality.
- Boosting Confidence: They left knowing their potential is greater than any challenge.
- Academic Fuel: By nurturing a growth mindset, we are giving them the emotional stamina to succeed in the classroom.
When 1,200 kids leave a gym feeling like they can conquer the world, you haven’t just had an assembly—you’ve started a movement.
A Houston-Sized Thank You!
A massive, Mustang-sized thank you to Alyse Hawkins and the West University Elementary PTO for the invitation and the world-class coordination. Thank you to Ms. Soderberg for your heart for these students, and to Principal Scott Disch for your incredible hospitality.
To the students of West U: Keep being relentless. Keep being kind. And always remember: Impossible is just I’M POSSIBLE!

ABOUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER EDDIE CORTÉS
With over 20 years of experience, Eddie Cortés is regarded as one of the most engaging elementary and middle school speakers in the youth market. His mission is to empower students to build resilience and a positive self-worth. This mission is personal. As a middle schooler, Eddie stopped believing in himself. In fact, his negative self-view impacted his grades, relationships, choices, and ultimately his dreams. This experience is what fuels Eddie’s mission. He wants every elementary and middle school student to know that they are worthy of their dreams and have the tools to chase them.
