Motivational Youth Speaker in Connecticut: Eddie Cortés at Hamden Middle School

I’ve been teaching for 19 years, and that is the greatest speech I have ever heard at a school assembly.

I'm Possible Book - A Kid's Guide to Building Resilience by Motivational Youth Speaker Eddie Cortes
Are you ready to help your students achieve the impossible? In his book, “I’m Possible”, a kids book about resilience, Eddie Cortés provides a roadmap for helping students become resilient problem-solvers and dream-chasers.

Motivational Youth Speaker in Connecticut: Eddie Cortés at Hamden Middle School

If you think a room full of 800 middle schoolers is a recipe for chaos, you haven’t seen what happens when you spark a conversation about their future dreams and the grit it takes to reach them. I just got back from Hamden, CT, and let me tell you—the energy at Hamden Middle School was absolutely historic. As a motivational youth speaker in Connecticut, I’ve seen some incredible crowds, but this Career Day keynote felt like a stadium-sized movement of young leaders ready to prove that “impossible” is just a dare to work harder. Grab a snack, pull up a chair, and let’s chat about how we turned a school gym into a launchpad for the next generation of “I’M POSSIBLE” legends.

Navigating the Career Day Pressure Cooker with Middle School Students

Career Day is an incredible tradition, especially at a place like Hamden Middle School, which pulled out all the stops with over 40 speakers, workshops, and hands-on activities. But here’s the reality I often see as a motivational youth speaker in Connecticut schools: for a 7th or 8th grader, looking at the “future” can feel less like an adventure and more like a high-stakes exam.

The problem isn’t a lack of ambition; these kids are smart and thoughtful. The real hurdle is the “inner wiring” of social emotional learning. When a student hears about successful careers, they often compare their current “messy middle” to someone else’s finish line. If they stumble in algebra or face-plant in a social situation, they start to believe that their big dreams are off-limits. Without a targeted social emotional learning program framework, they don’t have the tools to develop resilience when life gets difficult. They see a roadblock and think “stop sign” instead of “stepping stone.”

A High-Energy Middle School Speaker Meets 800 Future Leaders

That’s where the I’m Possible Assembly Program come into play. This wasn’t your typical “sit still and listen” middle school assembly program or a dry and boring lecture. We brought a high-energy presentation designed to shake up the status quo and remind these students that their success starts the moment they decide to get back up.

Motivational Youth Speaker in Connecticut: Eddie Cortés at Hamden Middle

During my keynote, I shared the honest truth through humor and powerful storytelling: you will stumble. You will fail. I even brought several students on stage to help me share my own childhood dream of playing professional baseball for the New York Yankees. We talked about the reality of the grind—that even the best players strike out.

We leaned into the core pillars that make my work as a motivational youth speaker in Connecticut so effective:

  • Develop Resilience: We discussed how to bounce back from adversity and view obstacles as opportunities for growth.
  • The “I’M POSSIBLE” Mindset: We broke down the word “Impossible” until 800 students were chanting that they are full of possibility.
  • Unlock Potential: We focused on discovering hidden talents and gaining the confidence to pursue passions with unwavering determination.

Resilience is the Ultimate Career Skill

The shift in the room was palpable. Hamden Middle School has an incredible culture, and by the end of the school assembly program, the students weren’t just inspired—they were equipped.

  • Boosted Confidence: Students gained the belief in themselves to overcome academic and personal challenges.
  • Developed Resilience: They walked away with a “bounce-back” mentality, realizing that a face-plant is just a setup for a comeback.
  • Inspired Dreams: As the session ended, I was flooded with high-fives, request for photos and autographs. Students were telling me their dreams—future engineers, artists, entrepreneurs, and athletes—all buzzing with a new sense of “awesomeness.”

When students realize that success isn’t about being perfect, but about being resilient enough to get back up, everything changes. In a world that’s constantly shifting, the ability to bounce back from adversity and turn every obstacle into an opportunity is what truly defines a leader. Seeing 800 kids leave that gym with a renewed sense of self-worth and the confidence to conquer their own “impossible” moments? That is exactly why I love being a motivational youth speaker.

A Connecticut-Sized Thank You to Hamden Public Schools

I want to give a massive shoutout to the leadership at Hamden Middle School for the invitation and the world-class hospitality. A huge thank you to Andrea Mitchell (School Counselor)—planning Career Day with 40+ speakers is no small feat, and you executed it perfectly! Amazing work!!!

Thank you to Principal Scott Trauner, AP Hector Ortiz, and AP Jessica Coffey for your warm welcome and for prioritizing the “heart” of your students. Your dedication to the Hamden community is what makes this school a beacon of growth for these young leaders.

To the students of Hamden: Keep being relentless. Keep being kind. And when you face a challenge, remember: Impossible is just I’M POSSIBLE!

ABOUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER EDDIE CORTÉS

With over 20 years of experience, Eddie Cortés is regarded as one of the most engaging elementary and middle school speakers in the youth market. His mission is to empower students to build resilience and a positive self-worth. This mission is personal. As a middle schooler, Eddie stopped believing in himself. In fact, his negative self-view impacted his grades, relationships, choices, and ultimately his dreams. This experience is what fuels Eddie’s mission. He wants every elementary and middle school student to know that they are worthy of their dreams and have the tools to chase them.
