What’s up, everyone! Your favorite motivational youth speaker, Eddie Cortés, here, and I’m still processing an unforgettable moment from a recent tour stop in Las Vegas, NV. Forget the bright lights and casinos—the real jackpot was found in the hearts and minds of the students at Somerset Academy—in a moment that has never happened before in my decades of speaking.
I was sharing a deeply personal story with 7th and 8th graders at Somerset Academy about the verbal abuse I endured from my father. I talked about how his words and his absence made me question my self-worth. But when I mentioned that my mother found the courage to divorce him and free us from his abuse, the students did something truly incredible.
They erupted in spontaneous cheers and applause for my mom’s bravery.
I was stunned. I had to stop my presentation. In that moment, the students showed an incredible amount of empathy. They instinctively understood that a person’s worth is not defined by someone else’s opinion or how they are treated. They recognized that self-worth is inherent. It was a beautiful, unforgettable moment that left me humbled and so grateful.
From Doubt to “I Can, I Will!”
That powerful moment underscored the very mission of my I’m Possible School Assembly Program: to nurture a positive self-worth, knowing they are worthy of their dreams. This is a message I carry everywhere, and it resonated deeply with the students in Las Vegas.
After the presentation, a 5th-grade boy, just about my height with dark hair and freckles, came up to me. He told me he wanted to be a voice actor but has a difficult time reading. He said that my message helped him realize that his passion was not limited by this challenge. He saw it as an opportunity to try harder and told me he was “up to the challenge of doing the hard thing.”
That moment gave me goosebumps. This young man—just a fifth grader—didn’t just hear the words; he understood the depths of my message. He truly internalized the “I can, I will!” mindset, proving that when a student is given the tools to believe in themselves, they will absolutely rise to the occasion.
More Than a School Assembly—It’s a Movement
The impact of a high-energy, engaging school assembly program is powerful. It’s a chance for students to see themselves in a different light, to develop a positive self-worth, and to gain the belief in themselves to overcome challenges. My presentations are designed to do exactly that, helping students:
- Boost Confidence: Students gain the belief in themselves to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
- Nurture a Positive Self-Worth: Students are reminded that they are worthy of their dreams and that their value is not determined by others.
