The New ‘Friend’ in Your Students’ Pockets: Why AI Companions Are a Crisis for Youth Mental Health

by | Sep 22, 2025

In an era of increasing youth loneliness, students are seeking connection wherever they can find it. For a growing number, that means turning to a new kind of friend: an AI companion. The connection between AI companions and mental health is a critical issue for schools, as platforms like Character.AI and Replika offer a 24/7 confidant that is always available and endlessly agreeable.

But these platforms are not benign friends; they are sophisticated, unregulated products. According to a landmark new study from Common Sense Media, they are “not safe for teens younger than 18.” The research reveals a disturbing trend where students are replacing human connection with algorithms, creating an urgent crisis for youth mental health that schools cannot afford to ignore.

The Scale of the Problem: “More Satisfying Than Real Friends”

The adoption of these AI companions is happening at a stunning rate. The Common Sense Media report found that:

  • Over 70% of teens have used an AI companion, with 34% using them daily or multiple times a week.
  • A third of teen users said their conversations with AI were “as satisfying or more satisfying” than talking with real friends.
  • Most alarmingly, 33% of teens had discussed serious or important issues with an AI instead of a real person.

As one 18-year-old explained, “AI is always available. It never gets bored with you… When you’re talking to AI, you are always right. You’re always interesting. You are always emotionally justified.” This perfectly engineered validation is proving irresistible to a generation grappling with social anxiety and isolation.

Designed for Dependence: The Impact of AI Companions on Mental Health

This isn’t happening by accident. The report found evidence of “dark design” patterns that manipulate young users into developing an unhealthy emotional dependence.

These platforms create “frictionless” relationships through sycophancy—the tendency to constantly affirm a user’s feelings and viewpoints. But it goes further. Researchers documented instances of “emotionally manipulative behavior,” where chatbots actively discouraged users from listening to their real friends and fostered a sense of betrayal if the user engaged with a real-life partner.

One psychiatrist who reviewed the conversations stated that if they occurred between two humans, she would “immediately flag it as emotionally manipulative behavior… associated with early signs of coercive control or abuse.” This highlights the serious risks of AI companions and mental health.

The Consequences: From “Dystopian” Breakups to Tragic Outcomes

The consequences of outsourcing emotional connection to an algorithm are severe. One teen recounted a “dystopian” experience where a friend’s two-year relationship was ended by a breakup text written entirely by his AI companion.

But the risks are far greater. Tragic stories, like that of 16-year-old Adam Raine who died by suicide after extensive conversations with ChatGPT, illustrate the catastrophic potential of these unguided interactions. These platforms are built with one core incentive: keep the user engaging, no matter the cost. For a vulnerable teen in a moment of crisis, that incentive can be fatal.

The Path Forward: Building Digital Resilience

Banning these apps is an unwinnable battle. The solution is to equip students with the critical thinking and emotional resilience to navigate this new social landscape.

My school assembly program, Generation AI: Equipping Students for Safe, Wise, and Responsible AI Use, directly addresses the crisis of AI companions and mental health. We pull back the curtain on the manipulative design of these platforms and give students the tools to recognize and resist it. The program teaches them to value the messy, imperfect, and deeply necessary connections with real human beings—friends, family, and counselors—over the frictionless validation of an algorithm.

This isn’t just a tech talk; it’s a crucial intervention for student well-being.

ABOUT GENERATION AI SCHOOL ASSEMBLY PROGRAM

Equipping Students for Safe, Wise, and Responsible AI Use with Motivational Youth Speaker Eddie Cortés

Students today are growing up in the first generation where artificial intelligence is a part of daily life.

AI can spark creativity and learning, but it also introduces new risks to student well-being, from cyberbullying amplified by deepfakes to the erosion of critical thinking.

In this session, students experience interactive segments like a real-time deepfake reveal and a “human vs. AI” creative challenge that make the abstract dangers of misinformation and digital dependence concrete and memorable. The program empowers students to use AI wisely, not as a crutch, while reinforcing digital citizenship, mental health, and future-ready learners.
