“Absolutely loved having Eddie. It was amazing!”
Resilience in Red Sox Nation with Top Youth Speaker Eddie Cortés
You know you’re in Red Sox Nation when the second you walk into a gym wearing Yankees gear, the heckling begins. I mean, hardcore fans. We’re talking booing, jeering, a few well-placed jabs about the pinstripes—and that was just from the teachers. 😂
But what started as a room full of hecklers quickly turned into something way better: a room full of resilient dream chasers.
This stop on my I’m Possible school assembly program tour brought me to Fowler Middle School in Massachusetts. Yep, Red Sox territory. And yes, I’m a proud Yankees fan. But we found common ground through laughter, storytelling, and a message that landed exactly where it needed to: in their hearts.
By the end of the assembly, I wasn’t getting heckled—I was getting hugs, fist bumps, and autograph requests. Students AND teachers. Red Sox fans may talk a lot of smack, but one thing’s for sure: they’ve got big hearts.
Dreams Bigger Than Rivalries
As students lined up to talk to me after the assembly, I heard the real magic:
- “I want to go to college one day.”
- “I want to be a lawyer and help people.”
- “I want to play professional soccer.”
They weren’t just inspired. They were dreaming out loud. And THAT is what this work is all about.
One of the biggest takeaways we focused on at Fowler was this: You can do hard things.
The Power of Doing Hard Things
I tell students all the time: life isn’t easy. In fact, it’s often unfair, complicated, and just plain hard. But those hard things? That’s where resilience is born.
When we:
- Push through the tough subjects
- Show up for the team even after a loss
- Keep trying when others say we can’t
We’re building grit. We’re building belief. We’re building unstoppable momentum.
That’s the I’m Possible Mindset: not letting what you can’t do get in the way of what you can do. It’s believing your potential is greater than your limitations—greater than anyone’s opinion of you.

Big Thanks to the Fowler Family
The culture at Fowler was something special. Every staff member I met radiated energy and commitment, but one teacher in particular deserves a huge shoutout: Maria Soler. She did the heavy lifting behind the scenes, applying for a grant to help bring me in so students could experience this message of resilience firsthand.
And Principal Keith Kinney? His words after the assembly meant the world:
“Absolutely loved having you. It was amazing!”
From the leadership to the staff to every high-fiving student—thank you for making this stop unforgettable.
Wrapping It Up
So yeah, I may have walked in a Yankees fan, but I walked out a fan of Fowler Middle School. Red Sox Nation, you were incredible.
To every student chasing a big dream, remember:
- Hard things build strong people.
- Your potential is greater than any obstacle.
- You are worthy of your dreams.
Keep doing the hard things. Keep chasing the I’m Possible.
Until next time my friends, dream BIG.
