Resilience and Big Dreams in San Antonio, TX with Top Youth Speaker Eddie Cortés
Nothing gets me hyped like walking into a school-wide pep rally packed with students, staff, and leadership all ready to celebrate hard work, excellence, and resilience. That’s exactly what I walked into at IDEA Ambrose & Freda Robinson in San Antonio, TX – and let me tell you, the energy was electric!
The school leadership—Principal Lorraine Bernal, Assistant Principal Ashley Wilson, and School Counselor Carrie Rosado—created an intentional and empowering environment that was already buzzing with excitement. Before I even took the stage, the school had celebrated both student and teacher awards, highlighting dedication, perseverance, and growth. It was clear: this is a campus that believes in doing hard things and celebrating the process.
A Message Rooted in Grit
When it was my turn to speak, I brought my I’M POSSIBLE school assembly program to life. This wasn’t just about hype (though there was plenty of that!)—it was about resilience and helping students understand one powerful truth:
You CAN do hard things.
We laughed. We reflected. We talked about the difference between what people say you can’t do and what you actually CAN do when you push through with determination. Whether it’s preparing for state tests or dreaming of becoming a pilot, artist, or pro athlete, students were reminded that the path to success is rarely easy—but it’s always worth it.
Students With Big Dreams
After the assembly, I was surrounded by students and teachers sharing their excitement. Students gave high-fives, asked for autographs, and most importantly, began sharing their dreams:
- “I want to be a lawyer one day.”
- “I’m going to be the first in my family to graduate college.”
- “I love science—I want to become an engineer!”
This is what it’s all about—seeing young people start to see what’s possible when they believe in themselves and put in the work.

Why We Teach Resilience
Here’s the thing: resilience is more than a buzzword. Research shows that resilient students perform better academically (yep, we’re talking about real GPA gains), and they learn to bounce back stronger from failure. It helps with friendships, sports, creative pursuits, and definitely with test prep.
At IDEA Ambrose & Freda Robinson, students were gearing up for state exams, and the message couldn’t have been more timely. My goal was to help them see the test as not just an obstacle, but a chance to rise up and prove to themselves what they’re capable of.
Doing hard things builds confidence. And confidence builds momentum.
Leadership That Inspires
I have to take a moment to celebrate the leadership at this campus. Principal Bernal, Assistant Principal Wilson, and Counselor Rosado have cultivated a culture that’s student-focused, encouraging, and high-energy. They didn’t just bring me in to talk—they brought me in as part of a larger effort to uplift and inspire their entire school family.
These are the kinds of leaders who make an impact far beyond test scores. They’re helping kids build character, courage, and belief in themselves—and it shows.
Until Next Time, San Antonio!
To all the students, staff, and leaders at IDEA Ambrose & Freda Robinson: THANK YOU for your warm welcome, your energy, and your willingness to lean into the tough stuff. Keep doing hard things. Keep dreaming big. Keep believing in what’s possible.
The I’M POSSIBLE message lives on in each of you. Can’t wait to see what dreams you chase next.
Until next time my friends, dream BIG.
