Building Resilience in Rochester, NY with Top Youth Speaker Eddie Cortés
Some schools just bring the energy, and Austin Steward Elementary in Rochester, NY did not disappoint. The students showed up ready to learn, ready to engage, and ready to dream big. And that’s exactly what we did!
Why Resilience is the Game-Changer
If there’s one thing I wanted every student to walk away with, it was this:
Resilience is the key to unlocking your full potential.
We talked about how life throws challenges our way—whether in the classroom, on the field, in friendships, or even at home. But resilient students don’t just get through tough times; they come out stronger.
Research shows that resilient students earn better grades, perform better in sports and the creative arts, and handle setbacks with a growth mindset. In other words—resilience isn’t just nice to have, it’s essential!
Big Lessons from “I’m Possible”
During the I’m Possible school assembly program, I shared some powerful reminders with the students:
- Your potential is greater than anyone’s opinion of you. Don’t let someone else’s doubts determine your future.
- Your potential is greater than your limitations. You might not be good at something yet, but that doesn’t mean you never will be.
- You are worthy of your dreams. If a dream has been placed in your heart, you deserve to chase it.
- You are full of possibilities. You don’t have to be defined by what you can’t do—you are capable of so much more than you think.
A Message That Stuck
Hearing students light up with excitement, realizing they can do hard things, is the reason I do what I do. It’s why I travel from school to school, state to state, pouring into the next generation of resilient dreamers.
And it’s always amazing when the school leadership sees the impact too! Dr. Gina DiTullio had this to say after the assembly:
